POSITION DESCRIPTION 

The Herpetofauna Albanian Society (HAS) seeks a Project Assistant with sea turtle survey experience to join the LIFE MEDTURTLES project. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the activities organized by the LIFE MEDTURTLES project by its different actions as the reduction of mortality of turtles caught in fishing gears; marine hot-spot areas for sea turtles: dynamic fishery management; Public awareness – Promoting the EU sea turtle population as a common EU heritage: fishermen, local communities and general public and help on the project management. He/she will assist on fishermen training, awareness raise, meetings for project promotion, and compilation of the reports. He/she will be working at the project office, HAS headquarter, Patok Sea Turtle Center, and fishing ports along the Albanian coastline. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

A bachelor’s degree from a college or university with major course of study in one of the natural sciences and have worked at least in 1 project related to sea turtles; or a master’s degree from a college or university with major course of study in one of the natural sciences or environment and have worked at least in 1 project as described above; or a doctorate from a college or university with major course of study in one of the natural sciences. 

 PREFERRED SELETION CRITERIA 

Candidates pursuing a PhD or a Master degree in marine science, ecology, conservation biology, environmental management or a closely related field, with experience conducting research on sea turtles, and/or with previous experience/collaborations with HAS are encouraged to apply and may be given preference.   

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES 

Knowledge of: sea turtle biology, ecology, conservation, nesting ecology, population ecology and habitat use; scientific terminology, principles and techniques including sampling, and statistics associated with biological research. Skills: quantitative skills, use of field equipment. Ability to: conduct field research, collect and organize data; work both independently and on collaborative projects; utilize problem-solving techniques; make taxonomic identifications; take tissue samples; use computer software for database, statistical, graphical, and word-processing applications; review technical literature and prepare written scientific reports, and popular articles; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; collaborate with volunteers; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, colleagues, and volunteers; communicate clearly results and findings of research to both scientific and non-scientific audiences; understand and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures implemented by the employer; perform field work (sometimes in extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, etc.), occasionally work extended hours (sometimes on weekends) and travel for multiple days; and maintain a valid driver’s license.
