POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Herpetofauna Albanian Society (HAS) seeks a field assistants to join the LIFEMEDTURTLES project. The successful candidate will assist the implementation of the actions foreseen under different actions of the LIFEMEDTURTLES project as reduction of mortality of turtles caught in fishing gears; marine hot-spot areas for sea turtles: dynamic fishery management; fishing gear modification for reducing turtle bycatch. His/her primary research focus will be scientific data collection for all the turtles bycaught through the lifetime of the project; tagging of the turtles prior to release; assist the transferring of the stranded or dead turtles to the rescue center; documentation of the turtles, activities and other events he/she will attend; training of the fishermen for the best ways of handling and releasing of the sea turtles; assist the compilation of the reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor’s degree from a college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and previous experience in field work; or a master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics.
PREFERRED SELETION CRITERIA
Candidates with a Master’s in marine science, ecology, conservation biology or a closely related field, with sea turtle survey experience are encouraged to apply and may be given preference. Applicants with experience conducting wildlife conservation and management activities, and especially pertaining to sea turtles and with previous experience with HAS may also be given preference.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Knowledge of: sea turtle biology, ecology and conservation, population ecology and habitat use; scientific terminology, principles and techniques, hypothesis testing, sampling, and statistics associated with biological research. Skills: strong quantitative skills, and use of field equipment. Ability to: conduct field research, collect and organize data; perform quantitative analysis of data; work both independently and on collaborative projects; utilize problem-solving techniques; make taxonomic identifications; take tissue samples; use computer software for database, and word-processing applications; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, colleagues, and volunteers; communicate clearly results and findings of research to both scientific and non-scientific audiences; understand and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to the conduct of a Commission employee; perform field work (sometimes in extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, etc.), occasionally work extended hours and travel for multiple days.
